Fine Grade – Often used as a top dressing in seed germination. Provides added water retention in both the mix and on top of the trays.
A major staple in the horticulture and greenhouse industries, vermiculite's properties allow for the material to be a natural soil additive as it has a neutral pH of 7 and expands in size during exfoliation to aerate the soil and improve drainage. Vermiculite is also an absorbent which aids in the proper maintenance of moisture in the soil preventing accumulation of molds and bacteria that can cause disease in plants. Additionally, it can retain then release plant food and nutrients aiding in growth and allowing for seed germination even when used with only fertilizer. Vermiculite is essential for improving yield in square foot gardening where the risk of over or under fertilizing and watering is high and space is limited. Both permanent and organic, vermiculite has many uses in gardening including transplanting rooted plants and bulbs, soil conditioning, decreasing propagation, root cuttings and even arranging cut flowers.
